Consultant Ophthalmologist

Biography:

Dr Burgess is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at NHS Lothian with expertise in strabismus (commonly referred to as ‘squint’), double vision and paediatric ophthalmology.


Dr Burgess is available for medicolegal consultations and expert testimony in ophthalmic cases.


Professional background:

Dr Burgess undertook his ophthalmology specialist training in Edinburgh before moving to Canada for sub-specialty fellowship training in both strabismus surgery and paediatric ophthalmology at the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Dr Burgess performs cataract surgery for adults, children and neonates.


Dr Burgess is the Training Programme Director for ophthalmology in South-East Scotland and holds an honorary research position with the University of St Andrews. He is the lead clinician for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in Edinburgh, providing a regional ROP treatment service.

Dr Burgess is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, as well as a member of the British and Irish Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Association (BIPOSA), the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and the Medical Defence Union (MDU).
