Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Emeritus

Biography:

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (NHS Ayrshire and Arran) — Mr Tait held this position at Crosshouse Hospital for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2016, providing extensive experience in trauma and elective orthopaedics.

Clinical Director, Trauma and Orthopaedics — During his tenure, he served as clinical director, overseeing surgical operations and resource management across trauma and elective services.

Medico-Legal Expert Witness — After retiring from NHS duties, Mr Tait built a thriving medico-legal practice spanning 25 years in West and Central Scotland. He typically reviews and writes around 12 legal reports per month, focusing on personal injury and clinical negligence, and occasionally testifies in court across Scotland, England, and Ireland.

Wide Clinical Expertise — Mr Tait’s orthopaedic specialisms include shoulder and knee surgery, fractures, musculoskeletal injuries (hand, wrist, upper and lower limbs, spine and neck), whiplash, sports injuries, and various trauma arising from road traffic accidents, slips, trips, workplace incidents, and public/domestic hazards.

Waiting times for appointment 4-6 weeks. Report available after appointment with full records 7-10 days.

Advocate for Equitable Healthcare Access — Following his clinical career, he actively highlighted disparities in patient waiting times between hospitals in Ayrshire, describing the “postcode lottery” effect where Crosshouse had significantly longer delays than University Hospital Ayr. He called for structural reforms such as separating trauma and elective surgery to improve fairness and efficiency.

Thought Leadership in Healthcare Planning — During the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Tait warned that reduced elective surgery capacity, combined with theatre downtime and bed pressures, could lead to some patients never receiving hip or knee replacements—or waiting several years. He advocated for resilient, separate treatment pathways (green vs. red zones) and stronger protections for elective surgery services.

Company Founding & Directorship — Beyond his clinical and medico-legal work, Mr Tait serves as a surgeon-director of Gavin R Tait Limited, established in 2004, which operates in the medical care sector. He also directs Tait Property Ltd since 2017—demonstrating engagement in both healthcare and business sectors.
