Consultant Gastroenterologist

Biography:

I am a consultant gastroenterologist working at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. I trained in medicine at St Andrews and Manchester Universities. Post graduate training started in the North West of England at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Specialist training in gastroenterology was undertaken in South East Scotland and included a fellowship year at UCLA, Los Angeles, USA. I also completed a post graduate research thesis assessing prognostic aspects of inflammatory bowel disease and have published over 140 academic papers on various aspects of gastroenterology especially inflammatory bowel disease.


I have had a number of national roles including Chair of the IBD section of the British Society of Gastroenterology and the IBD lead for the Scottish Governments Improving Patient Pathways Programme. I was also the clinical lead for the UK IBD Audit for 10 years. This was a UK wide audit programme funded by NHS England through the HQIP delivered national audit programme.


I am currently the clinical director for gastroenterology in NHS Lothian, a physician adviser for the national charity Crohn’s and Colitis UK and an office bearer for the Scottish Governments Cross Party Group on Inflammatory Bowel disease.

I have experience in most areas of luminal gastroenterology

Medicolegal Experience:

I have undertaken medicolegal work for over 10 years. I have acted in approximately equal proportions for the defence and the prosecution. I have participated in negligence cases, fatal accident enquiries, employment tribunals and have presented evidence in court. I restrict my remit as an expert witness to aspects of luminal gastroenterology that I am involved with on a day to day basis in clinical practice. I aim to provide a sensible, evidence based and timely medico-legal service.
